Santa Monica History Museum Celebrates City’s 135th Birthday
The Santa Monica History Museum’s celebration for the City of Santa Monica’s 135th birthday, held recently at the landmark Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club, featured a surprise visit by actress Gloria Stuart.

She is best known for her role as Rose in James Cameron’s Titanic, one of the most popular and highest-grossing movies of all time.
When Ms. Stuart was introduced by museum President Louise Gabriel, she received a rousing welcome by everyone in attendance, including city officials, long-time Santa Monica residents, and invited guests.
Louise, well aware of the actress’s roots to the Santa Monica community the fact that she was born and raised in Santa Monica, praised the actress for her contributions to the city, and for exemplifying its rich history in the performing arts.
Ms. Stuart, who just celebrated her 100th birthday on July 4, shared reminisces of her life in Santa Monica where she was born, from attendance at 6th Street School, the city’s first school, to graduation from Santa Monica High School in 1927. She is a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild and has appeared on stage, in television and in more than 30 films.
Among the guests attending the event were former mayors Pam O’Connor and Richard Bloom, city council member Gleam Davis, Santa Monica Fire Engine 6 Battalion Chief Jose Torres, Captain Dan Watje, several firefighters, Jane Newcomb Whiting whose parents once owned the eastern end of the Santa Monica Pier, and Darlene Bahr, president of the Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club. |
